It's Ski Season!
Breckenridge Ski Resort Celebrates its 50th Birthday this Year

Find your jackets, buy your passes, and dust off your skis, because the ski season is just around the corner! With snow and temperatures falling, the excitement for this year is building. Although we love the summers in Breckenridge, it is the blue-bird, knee-deep powder days that the locals dream about.

It will be difficult to match last years record breaking 519 inches of snowfall, but the outlook is positive. The La Nina storm system that graced the Rocky Mountains with so much snow last year is slated to return again this year. Snow makers and Mother Nature are working hard so that Breckenridge will open on a very special day this year: 11/11/11.This season is particularly exciting because it will be celebrating Breckenridges 50th birthday as a ski resort.

Since Breckenridge started turning its lifts on December 16th, 1961, it has established itself as one of the worlds most popular ski destinations, welcoming millions of visitors a year. The town will be hosting celebrations to commemorate this special day which also aligns with the annual Winter Dew Tour. Although the town continues to evolve and develop, it has never lost its laid-back, welcoming character. Here is a look at some of Breckenridges accomplishments over the last 50 years:

-Breck has received 17,500 inches of snow since the resort opened in 1961

-Skiers from all 50 states and over 60 different countries have made the journey to ski here

-In 1984, Breck became the first resort in Colorado to welcome snowboarders

-In 1981, Breck was the first resort in North America to install a high speed quad chairlift

-The Imperial express Superchair on Peak 8 is the highest high-speed quad chairlift in the world, reaching an elevation of 12,840 feet.

No matter how much snow we get or how many visitors come, this year is set to be a good one. We hope you have an opportunity to come celebrate Breckenridges 50 years of adrenaline-seeking, snow-falling, powder-turning, pure mountain fun. You will be glad you did.
